Visa Files From Mumbai: What the Consulate Expects
📌 TL;DR — Net Worth Certificate for Visa in Mumbai at a Glance
Mumbai applicants often deal with missions directly, not only through a visa centre. Posts at Nariman Point and the Bandra Kurla Complex decide files from several states, each publishing its own expectations. A business visitor pack differs from a family sponsorship in whose funds are shown. A net worth certificate for a Mumbai visa file therefore names whose assets are certified, on what date, and in which currency.
Mumbai applicants are writing for a reader who will never meet them. That reader sees a great many files a day. The missions here decide applications from several states, so the volume behind each desk is large and the reading is quick. A pack that has to be worked out will not be worked out. The general standard is described in our note on what missions look for.
That makes clarity worth more than completeness. An unexplained credit, a figure with no stated date, or an asset that cannot be tied to a document each create a doubt. The file cannot answer any of them later. A document that explains itself as it is read is worth more than one that is merely complete. Visa categories and entry conditions are published by the Bureau of Immigration.
What the Certificate Does at a Mumbai Mission
The missions in this city decide applications from well beyond it. Consular jurisdiction here reaches across several states and union territories, so a desk works through a large volume and reads quickly. A net worth certificate for visa in Mumbai is an accountant's dated statement of holdings and obligations, and its job is to be understood on one reading. It is not the mission's own form and does not replace one where a form exists.
That sets the standard it is written to. The basis of preparation, the date the position speaks to, and the fact that holdings were verified against documents rather than described by the client all sit on its face. Anything it asserts has to be traceable to a paper in the pack. A net worth certificate for visa in Mumbai that makes the reader reconstruct the working is treated as unexplained. A form supplied by the mission always takes precedence.
Key terms on this page:
Liquid AssetsLiquid assets are holdings that can be converted into cash quickly and at a value that can be predicted in advance.
Proof of Funds (POF)Proof of funds is evidence that an applicant has money available for a stated purpose.
Blocked AccountA blocked account is a bank account opened in the destination country into which a student deposits a year's living costs before the visa is granted.
Source of FundsSource of funds and proof of balance answer different questions, and files fail on the difference more often than on the amount.
Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS)The liberalised remittance scheme permits a resident individual to remit money abroad up to a limit in each financial year, for a defined set of purposes.
Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate (FIRC)A foreign inward remittance certificate evidences that money arriving in an Indian account came from abroad, naming the remitter, the amount, the currency, the date and the purpose declared for the transfer.
ApostilleAn apostille certifies that a signature on a public document is genuine and that the person who signed held the office they claimed.
Specimen: What Your Certificate Looks Like
Values are masked on the dual currency sample. Missions here work at volume, so the sample is laid out to be read once: basis, date, currency and rate on the face, and the schedule beneath. Where a recent credit is shown, the asset it came from appears in the schedule rather than being left to the bank statement to explain.
All names, addresses, registration numbers and amounts are replaced with X characters. The sample carries a Patron Accounting watermark and a Specimen badge on every page so that a cropped screenshot still shows what it is.

Consulates at BKC and Nariman Point
Your Appointment Is at BKC
The mission handles the application directly, not through a visa centre. It publishes its own documentation expectations, and those differ from the expectations of its neighbours in the same complex.
The Submission Goes to Nariman Point
A consulate in the older diplomatic cluster takes the file. What it asks for, and in what order, is set by that mission and not by any general rule for the city.
A Business Visitor File Is Assembled
Travel is for meetings or a conference and the company is meeting part of the cost. Whose funds are being shown, personal or corporate, has to be unambiguous on the certificate.
A Relative Abroad Is Sponsoring
The costs are being met by a family member already overseas. Their position and the relationship both have to be evidenced alongside the applicant's own holdings.
Local bodies
Filing With Missions at BKC and Nariman Point and Other Mumbai Bodies
US, UK and Schengen missions at BKC and Nariman PointMumbai is a consular city and the missions are spread across a few square kilometres of the island city and Bandra. Germany sits at Hoechst House on Backbay Reclamation at Nariman Point, Spain at Express Towers on the same stretch and Poland at Nirmal Building. The Netherlands is at Forbes Building near Azad Maidan, Italy at Kanchenjunga on G. Deshmukh Marg at Cumballa Hill, and Sweden at the TCG Financial Centre in G Block at the Bandra Kurla Complex.
How far those jurisdictions reachThey reach well beyond the city. The German consulate general here covers Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh together with Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Sweden covers Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and the same union territories, and Spain's list is wider again. A file lodged in Mumbai is frequently a file from somewhere else.
VFS MumbaiMost of those missions take the pack through an application centre rather than at the mission itself, and the centre applies the checklist it has been given. Whether the certificate is accepted at the counter and whether it satisfies the officer are two separate tests, and passing the first says nothing about the second.
Local records
BKC and Nariman Point Consulate Submissions
Consulates at BKC and Nariman PointA Mumbai file is usually competing with the applicant's own bank statement rather than standing alone. The missions here see a high volume of business travel, and an account showing a large credit shortly before the application draws attention that a steady balance does not. Where a recent credit is genuine, the certificate is stronger if the asset it came from is visible in the statement of affairs and not only in the bank. The date the position speaks to matters as much as the total.
Business visitor filesBusiness visitor applications from the city are made by people whose worth sits inside a company. A director's personal position and the company's are different figures, and a mission asking about the applicant is not asking about the balance sheet of the employer. Shareholding, loans to the company and a director's current account balance are the personal entries, and they are evidenced from audited accounts rather than asserted. An employer's covering letter is a separate document doing a separate job. It confirms the purpose of travel and who is paying, and it is not evidence of what the traveller holds. Where a company is meeting the cost, the mission commonly still wants to see that the applicant is not dependent on the trip being funded. That is a question about the applicant and not about the employer.
Family sponsorshipsSponsored applications reverse the question. The sponsor's position is being certified and the relationship has to be evidenced independently, because the certificate speaks to money and not to family. Where a sponsor lives abroad, the assets certified are frequently in India while the undertaking is given overseas. The two documents should describe the same person the same way, down to the spelling in the passport.
Why brevity works better hereBecause these missions decide files from five states and three union territories, the volume behind each desk is large and the reading is quick. Anything requiring the reader to work out what was done will be treated as unexplained. Naming the basis of preparation, the date the position speaks to, and the fact that it was verified against documents rather than a client statement does more in Mumbai than additional detail.

Our Process
From Papers to Signed Certificate, Timed to Your Mumbai Appointment
Six steps from the scope conversation to a signed certificate carrying a UDIN.
Step 1
Mumbai submission route established
We establish where the file is going, which from Mumbai means a consulate at BKC or Nariman Point taking the file directly, and what that route expects of a funds document. The destination decides the form of the certificate long before any balance is looked at.
Step 2
Source of funds evidenced
Each balance is traced back to its origin, because a recent credit with no visible source raises the question the evidence was meant to close. Gifts, property sales and family transfers are documented at source, never merely asserted.
Step 3
Sponsor position certified
Where somebody else funds the application their holdings are certified on the same basis as the applicant's. The figures are laid out in the form an affidavit of support calls for, where the destination expects a formal commitment.
Step 4
Dual currency figures fixed
The total is shown in rupees and in the currency the mission works in, at a reference rate carrying its own date. Nothing is left for a consular officer to convert on terms of their own choosing.
Step 5
Signed in final form
A practising chartered accountant signs and generates the UDIN while the document is in its final state. Legalisation attaches to that signed original, so the sequence cannot be reversed without producing the whole thing again.
Step 6
Legalisation arranged from Mumbai
For a Hague Convention destination the signed original goes for MEA apostille; otherwise the longer chain ending in embassy attestation applies. From Mumbai the sequence is worked backwards from the appointment already held.
What to Send Us From Mumbai
The passport, spelt exactly as every other paper in the pack spells the name
The mission's own funds form, where it publishes one
Audited accounts for any company the applicant holds shares in or has lent to
Evidence of where a recent large credit came from, traced to the asset it left
The sponsor's undertaking, where one has been signed abroad
Proof of relationship to the sponsor, evidenced apart from the funds
Where Mumbai Visa Files Get Held Up
Challenge
Why it happens
How it is handled
A recent credit has no visible source
Money arrives shortly before the application from a genuine sale or maturity that the statement does not show.
The underlying asset is shown in the statement of affairs so the credit is explained where the reader is looking.
The company's figures stand in for the applicant
Worth sits inside a business and the traveller thinks of it as their own.
Personal entries are taken from the audited accounts, and the company's balance sheet is not offered as the applicant's position.
Two documents name the sponsor differently
An undertaking signed abroad and a certificate issued in India spell a name from different records.
The passport spelling governs, and every document in the pack is brought into line with it.
The file is complete but not clear
Volume behind each desk is high and a pack that needs reconstructing is read as unexplained.
Basis, date and method of verification are stated on the face, and detail is cut rather than added.
What a Visa Certificate Costs Mumbai Applicants
Certification does not cost more in Mumbai than anywhere else. The fee is the
national one: Starting from INR 2499(Exl GST and Govt. Charges)
for one individual with records in order, and On quote where several properties,
unlisted shareholdings or reconstructed records are involved.
A large deposit shortly before an application draws attention that a steady balance does not. Where the money is genuine but its source is not visible anywhere in the statement, the file ends up answering the wrong question.
A Director's Company Offered Instead
A mission asking about the applicant is not asking about the employer's balance sheet. Shareholding and loans to the company are the personal entries, and substituting the company's own figures overstates the traveller.
A Sponsor Named Two Ways
Assets certified in India and an undertaking signed abroad have to describe one person identically, down to the spelling in the passport. A difference between them is read as a discrepancy rather than as a typing error.
Detail Offered Instead of Clarity
Desks here work through files from several states at speed. Anything requiring the reader to reconstruct what was done is treated as unexplained, and additional length does not compensate for it in any way.
Why Clients in Mumbai Use Patron
Four things you can check before you commission the certificate. Each is a claim with the proof behind it.
Collected in the island city
The Marine Lines office is within reach of the Nariman Point and Bandra Kurla posts, so a signed original can be collected in person ahead of an appointment.
Written to be read once
Desks here work through files from several states at speed, so basis, date and method of verification sit on the face rather than in a covering note.
Credits traced to their source
Where a large deposit lands shortly before the application, the asset it came from is shown in the statement rather than left for the bank record to explain.
Verifiable at the desk
An officer can confirm the UDIN on the Institute's portal, which is worth more than length on a file that gets a short reading.
Choosing a basis
Bank Statements Alone or a Certificate With Them
Form of funds evidence
What it gives you
What it costs
Bank statements only
No cost, and every mission accepts them as part of a pack
They show balances, not what is owned, owed or pledged
A certificate only
One dated position, verifiable, easy to read at volume
Missions still expect to see the underlying accounts
Both, agreeing with each other
The statement explains the balances rather than repeating them
Any inconsistency between them is more visible, not less
Use both, and make sure they agree. Where a mission's published checklist asks only for statements, a certificate is optional and adding one is a judgement call, not a requirement.
See the Figure the Way the Desk Will See It
Enter holdings and the destination currency to see what a mission reading at volume will take from the file. It is a quick check on whether the position speaks for itself without explanation. The result is indicative and the certificate carries the rate and date actually applied.
The converter applies the rate you enter. It publishes no rate of its own: the rate on the document must be one the reader can verify, and its date goes on the face of the document beside it.
Consular Jurisdiction and the Law Behind a Mumbai File
Mumbai files are decided by consular posts whose authority and jurisdiction come from treaty rather than from Indian statute. What that means practically is that the reader's requirements are published by the mission and are not negotiable locally.
Indian law governs what the applicant holds and how it is evidenced, and the professional standard governs the certificate.
Vienna Convention on Consular Relations 1963is the basis on which consular posts operate and set their own documentary requirements within their published jurisdiction.
Income-tax Act 1961, section 139requires the return the certificate's figures are read alongside, which is the first cross-check a mission makes.
Companies Act 2013, section 2(57)defines a company's net worth, which is a different figure from the director's own and may not be offered in its place.
Transfer of Property Act 1882, section 58identifies a mortgage, so a flat charged to a lender is shown with the charge rather than at gross value.
ICAI Guidance Note on Reports or Certificates for Special Purposes, Revised 2016governs the wording, and requires the accountant to state what was verified rather than assumed.
Do the Mumbai consulates accept documents directly rather than through a visa centre?
Some do for certain categories. Missions at the Bandra Kurla Complex and Nariman Point each publish their own submission route. Business and official categories are more often handled directly than tourist files. Because the route decides the checklist, it is read on the mission's own page before the funds pack is assembled.
How does a business visitor file differ from a family sponsorship in whose funds are shown?
The paying party changes. In a business visit the company usually meets the costs. So the company's position and a letter of invitation carry the file, with the traveller's own means shown as support. In a family sponsorship the sponsor's certificate is central and the applicant's holdings are secondary. The certificate names whose net worth it reports.
Does a sponsor living abroad also need an Indian chartered accountant's certificate?
Not usually. A sponsor resident overseas evidences means through local bank statements, tax filings and an affidavit of support prepared where they live. An Indian certificate becomes relevant where that sponsor holds assets in India, in which case the Indian holdings are certified here and the overseas ones evidenced abroad.
Which Mumbai consulates expect a dual-currency presentation?
It varies by mission, so the certificate is prepared to show both by default. A rupee total with the destination currency equivalent, the rate used and the rate date printed alongside satisfies missions that ask for it. It does not trouble those that do not. The alternative, reissuing after a query, costs a week.
Do Mumbai property holdings help demonstrate ties to India?
They contribute. A visa officer assessing whether an applicant will return looks at employment, family and property together, and an owned Mumbai flat is a substantial anchor. It is not decisive on its own: refusals citing weak ties usually turn on the overall picture rather than on the absence of any single asset.
Does a merchant navy applicant's file work differently?
The income evidence does. A seafarer's earnings arrive as foreign remittance against a contract rather than as a domestic salary. So the certificate is read with the continuous discharge certificate, the contract and the bank credits. The asset schedule itself is prepared exactly as for any other individual applicant.
Can one certificate cover a couple applying together?
Where one of them funds the trip, yes, with the other named as accompanying. Where both are assessed on their own means, or where assets are held separately, two certificates read more cleanly than one joint document. Jointly held assets are shown at each holder's share so that nothing is counted twice across the two.
Does a directorship in a Mumbai company strengthen a business visa file?
It supports the purpose of travel more than the funds. A directorship establishes the business relationship behind the visit, evidenced by the company's registration and the board record. The funds question is answered by the certificate and the bank statements. Missions treat the two as separate tests and expect evidence for each.
Are demat holdings accepted as available funds?
They are counted as assets, not as ready money. A consulate asking whether the trip can be paid for looks at bank balances and deposits. Listed holdings must be sold and settled before they are spendable. The certificate reports the holding at its value on the stated date and the liquidity question is answered separately.
Is a certificate needed for a short business trip?
Often not. Where an employer or an overseas host meets the costs and the invitation letter says so, missions frequently ask for nothing beyond employment evidence. The certificate becomes relevant for self-employed travellers, for first-time applicants with a thin travel history, and where the applicant funds the trip personally.
Same-Day Certification for Mumbai Appointments
Where a Mumbai consulate at Bandra Kurla or Nariman Point takes your file directly, the scrutiny happens at submission rather than afterwards, so nothing can be fixed on the day. The certificate has to be final before you travel to the counter. Call or WhatsApp +91 94594 56700 to check yours against that route.
Start Your Mumbai Visa Certificate
Mumbai is unusual in that several consulates at Bandra Kurla Complex and Nariman Point take files directly rather than through an outsourced centre. That changes what is examined and when. Find out which applies to your destination before commissioning anything. Tell us where the file is going and what appointment you hold, and we will draw the certificate to that route.
