Digital Signature Certificate - Everything You Need to Know in 2026

📌 TL;DR - DSC Registration Services at a Glance

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic credential issued by a licensed Certifying Authority (CA) under Section 35 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. It authenticates the identity of the signer for filings on MCA, GST, Income Tax, and e-Tendering portals. Class 3 DSC is now mandatory for all government filings since January 2021. Validity ranges from 1 to 3 years. Patron Accounting assists with end-to-end DSC registration in 1-2 working days.

Every company director, LLP designated partner, and practising professional filing documents on the MCA, GST, or Income Tax portals requires a valid DSC. The Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), licenses Certifying Authorities to issue these certificates across India.

What Is a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a secure electronic key issued by a licensed Certifying Authority under Section 35 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, to authenticate the identity of the certificate holder for signing electronic documents.

DSCs use public key infrastructure (PKI) technology based on asymmetric cryptography as defined in Section 3 of the IT Act. The certificate binds a public key to the subscriber's identity, enabling recipients to verify that the signed document has not been altered. Section 5 of the IT Act grants legal recognition to digital signatures, making them equivalent to handwritten signatures for all purposes except those listed in the First Schedule (negotiable instruments, power of attorney, trusts, and wills).

The CCA, established under Section 17 of the IT Act, supervises licensed CAs and maintains the National Repository of Digital Certificates (NRDC). As of 2026, there are approximately 15 licensed Certifying Authorities in India, including eMudhra, (n)Code Solutions, Capricorn Identity Services, VSign, XtraTrust, and Sify Technologies.

Key Terms for DSC Registration:

Digital Signature Certificate (DSC): An electronic credential issued by a licensed CA under Section 35, IT Act, 2000, binding a public key to the subscriber's verified identity.

Certifying Authority (CA): A person or entity granted a license under Section 24, IT Act, 2000, to issue digital signature certificates to subscribers.

Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA): Government-appointed authority under Section 17, IT Act, 2000, that licenses and regulates CAs and maintains the Root Certifying Authority of India (RCAI).

Class 3 DSC: The highest level of digital signature certificate requiring in-person or video-based identity verification, mandatory for MCA, GST, Income Tax, and e-Tendering filings since January 2021.

eSign: An Aadhaar-based online electronic signature service enabling paperless signing without a physical USB token, facilitated by empanelled eSign Service Providers under CCA.

An Expired DSC Blocks All Statutory Filings - Renew Today

An expired DSC immediately blocks all statutory filings on MCA, Income Tax, GST, and e-Tendering portals. If a DSC expires during the annual return filing window (September-November for companies), the director risks delayed filing penalties under the Companies Act, 2013 and the Income Tax Act, 1961.

E-Tendering participants with expired DSCs lose the ability to submit bids, potentially losing government contracts. Proactive renewal - initiated at least 30 days before expiry - eliminates this compliance risk entirely.

Action: Call +91 945 945 6700 or WhatsApp us for same-day DSC issuance.
