Remote Tally Access
Remote Tally Access is Tally's built-in facility that lets an authorised user view and work on a company's data from another location using a Tally.NET ID, without being on the office machine. It is enabled through the company's online-access settings. It matters because it lets an accountant, auditor or owner reach the live books from anywhere while the data still resides on the company's own Tally installation.
What Is Remote Tally Access?
Remote Tally Access uses Tally's own Tally.NET service to connect an authorised user to a company that is running on another computer. The data stays on the host installation; the remote user logs in with a Tally.NET ID and is granted a defined level of access. It is different from screen-sharing or a VPN — it is Tally's native remote capability, controlled by user roles set on the company itself.
An Indian business meets remote access when its accountant is not in the same room as its server. A Surat textile firm whose CA works from a different office grants the CA a Tally.NET user role and remote-access rights, so the CA can review vouchers and pull reports on the live company without a copy being emailed around. Because access is controlled centrally, it can be granted, limited or withdrawn per user at any time.

How Remote Tally Access Works
A remote user reaches the live company through Tally's own service:
- 1Enable online access
The company owner turns on Tally.NET services for the company — the switch that makes remote access possible.
- 2Connect the company
The company is connected to the Tally.NET servers, so it can be reached from outside.
- 3Authorise the user
A Tally.NET ID is added as a remote user with a defined role, controlling what they can see and do.
- 4Remote user logs in
From another location, the user opens their Tally, signs in with the Tally.NET ID and loads the company remotely.
- 5Work within the granted role
The remote user views reports or enters vouchers as their role permits, on the live data hosted at the office.
How to Set Up Remote Tally Access in Tally
Remote access is configured from the company's Company menu (TallyPrime centralises these under Alt+K; in Tally.ERP 9 they were split across F11 Features and Alt+F3):
- 1Open the Company menu
From the Gateway of Tally, press Alt+K (Company).
- 2Enable Tally.NET services
Select Online Access and set 'Tally.NET Services for remote access' to Yes (optionally 'Connect company on loading' to Yes), then save with Ctrl+A.
- 3Connect the company
From Alt+K (Company), select Connect; a (c) appears next to the company name to show it is connected.
- 4Open Users and Passwords
From Alt+K (Company), select Users and Passwords.
- 5Add a Tally.NET user
Under User Roles, pick Tally.NET User and enter the remote user's Tally.NET ID (their email).
- 6Allow remote access
Set 'Allow Remote Access' to Yes for that user and save with Ctrl+A; the user can now load the company remotely with their Tally.NET ID.

Common Mistakes With Remote Tally Access
Remote access needs the same care as any live-data permission:
- Over-broad remote roles — Granting full rights to a remote user who only needs to view exposes the books → assign the narrowest role that fits the task.
- Company not connected — Enabling services but forgetting to connect the company means the remote user cannot load it → connect the company from the Company menu.
- Leaving access open after an engagement — Not withdrawing a remote user after work ends is a standing risk → remove or disable the Tally.NET user promptly.
- Host machine offline — If the hosting installation is off, remote access fails → keep the host running and connected during agreed hours.
