Bill of Materials (BOM) costing is the method of building up a finished product's cost from the list of every raw material, component and sub-assembly that goes into it, priced and totalled. It lives in the inventory or manufacturing module of the accounting system. It matters because it gives an accurate per-unit cost for pricing, valuing stock and measuring whether production is running to plan.

An Indian manufacturer meets BOM costing whenever it prices a product, values closing stock, or reconciles material consumption. It underpins the cost records prescribed in Form CRA-1 under the Companies (Cost Records and Audit) Rules 2014, which specifically expect a bill of material to be maintained for each product. It also drives the material cost that feeds inventory valuation under AS 2 or Ind AS 2.

A product cost is assembled from its BOM in a defined sequence:

    The accountant applies the inventory cost (FIFO or weighted average) to each component quantity.

  3. 3Add direct labour

    Labour time per unit is costed at the wage rate and added to material cost.

A Pune appliances manufacturer builds up the cost of a small pump from its BOM: ₹440 of steel, ₹200 for the motor, ₹120 of direct labour and ₹90 of overhead — ₹850 a unit. When the steel rate rises to ₹240 a kg, the BOM instantly reprices the pump to ₹890, prompting a review of the selling price before margins are eroded quietly.
