    Where stock is measured rather than counted, the instrument becomes part of the evidence. A weighbridge reading is not a fact about the goods; it is a fact about the goods and the machine together, and an audit that accepts the reading without examining the machine has verified nothing. Calibration is the control. Legal metrology requires weighing instruments in trade use to be verified and stamped periodically, and a valid, current stamp is the first thing to look for. Beyond it the auditor tests the practice: whether tare weights are taken each time or assumed from a table, whether the same vehicle produces consistent tares, whether the platform is level and clear, whether readings cluster suspiciously at round figures, and whether the gap between gross and net is arithmetically sound across a run of slips. A test weighing during the count, using a known load, is the direct check, and the difference it reveals applies to every reading in the period.

    Where Weight Replaces Counting

    In several trades stock is not counted at all, and the quantity in the records is a weight that some instrument produced. Bulk fertiliser and grain are the clearest cases. Material arrives and leaves by the lorry load, is never handled as discrete units, and the entire inventory record is built from weighbridge tickets. Whatever error the bridge carries is therefore embedded in every quantity the business has ever reported. Density and moisture effects sit between the weight and the quantity that matters. The same lot weighs materially more when wet than when dry, so a weight taken without a moisture reading cannot be converted to a standard-moisture quantity, and comparing an inbound weight at one moisture with an outbound weight at another produces a difference that is real in kilograms and meaningless in substance. Conversion between weight and units is the third complication. Where the business sells in bags and buys in bulk, or records in tonnes and issues in quintals, a conversion factor sits between the two records, and a factor applied inconsistently or never revisited will produce a permanent divergence that looks like stock loss and is arithmetic.

    Calibration and Its Evidence

    A weighbridge is a measuring instrument in trade use, so it is regulated rather than merely maintained. Legal metrology requirements provide for weighing instruments used in trade to be verified and stamped periodically by the authority, and the stamp is the primary evidence that the instrument was found accurate on a stated date. An expired stamp makes the instrument non-compliant for trade use and leaves every reading taken since legally unreliable and open to challenge, which matters considerably where months of stock movement rest on them. Calibration certificates and their currency are checked as a matter of course at any count where weight is the quantity. The certificate is examined for the date, the instrument it relates to, and the range over which the accuracy was established, since a bridge verified at one load is not thereby verified across its whole span. Certificates for the whole period the weights are relied upon are retained rather than only the current one, because a question about last quarter's tonnage is answered by last quarter's certificate. Drift between calibrations is the risk the periodic regime cannot eliminate. A platform can go out of tolerance the day after it was stamped, and nothing in the statutory cycle would reveal it until the next verification.

    Test Weighing at Audit

    The direct check on a weighbridge is to weigh something whose weight is already known and see what the instrument says. Re-weighing a sample independently is the practical form of that. A loaded vehicle is taken across the platform a second time, or the same load is weighed at a second bridge, and the two results are compared. A known reference load, where one is available, is better still because it removes the assumption that either instrument is right. Tare weight discipline is the other half of the test and it is where most systematic error lives. Net weight is gross less tare, so a tare taken from a table rather than measured, or a vehicle whose tare has changed because of fuel, water or a fitted accessory, produces a net weight that is wrong by a consistent amount on every load. Weighing the same vehicle empty on the same day is what establishes it. Variance tolerance and what exceeds it should be agreed before the test rather than debated after. Small differences are expected from platform levelling, wind and the position of the vehicle; a difference beyond the agreed tolerance applies to every reading in the period and is reported as such.

    Moisture, Density and Adjustment

    Weight-based stock is routinely adjusted before it becomes a quantity, and the adjustments are where the judgement sits. Moisture content is the principal one for agricultural commodities: the same lot weighs materially more wet than dry, so a weight recorded at the bridge is converted to a standard moisture basis before it is comparable with anything. The conversion requires a moisture reading taken at the time, from a calibrated meter, on a representative sample, and each of those three is a point at which the figure can drift. Standard adjustment factors are applied for handling loss, foreign matter and density where volume is being converted to weight, and legitimate factors are documented in advance, applied consistently, and derived from the trade or from the business's own measured experience. The point at which an adjustment becomes a manipulation is reached when the factor is selected after the result is known, varies between transactions without a stated reason, or is applied in one direction only. A factor that only ever reduces inbound weight and never outbound is not a measurement convention.

    Tightening Weighbridge Control

    Keep the calibration schedule and its records where they can be produced, because the stamp is the first thing anybody asks for and an expired one invalidates every reading taken since. Diarise the verification date rather than waiting for a reminder, and retain the certificates for the whole period the weights are relied upon rather than only the current one, since a question about last quarter's tonnage is answered by last quarter's certificate. Independent test weighing is the check that goes beyond the stamp. A known load taken across the platform, at a frequency you set rather than the one the law requires, tests whether the instrument is drifting between verifications. Doing it monthly on a bulk operation is cheap and it establishes a record that makes any later dispute straightforward. Having the weighbridge verified as part of a count is worth arranging where stock is measured rather than counted, because the entire quantity rests on the instrument, and a count that accepts readings without testing the machine has verified the paperwork.     Does a weighbridge need legal verification?

    A weighbridge used for trade or commercial transactions must be verified and stamped under the Legal Metrology Act, typically on an annual cycle. An expired or missing stamp undermines every stock quantity derived from that weighbridge, however carefully the weighing was done.
