How a NIC code is built
The National Industrial Classification 2008 arranges every economic activity from broad to narrow. Each digit you add narrows the activity.
A NIC code has five digits. The first two are the division, the first three the group, the first four the class, and all five the sub-class — the level you declare. Above the divisions sit 21 sections, lettered A to U; the letter groups divisions together but is not part of the number.
Taking 47912 as the worked example, the ladder that follows reads from the broadest level down to the code itself, each title in the official wording.
