Counting Greige, Finished Goods and Trims
A textile floor holds three populations that cannot be verified the same way. Greige fabric comes off the loom and is handled in rolls whose length varies within a lot, so it is verified by weight with length recorded from the roll ticket, and the two are cross-checked against the standard grams per square metre. Finished fabric has been through processing and is sold by length, so it is verified by measured length on a sample of rolls with the balance taken from tickets that the sample has validated. Trims are buttons, zips, labels and threads, counted in cartons or boxes with a piece count established from a weighed sample. Applying one method to all three fails in both directions: weighing finished fabric ignores that the price is per metre, and measuring greige length ignores that width and weight vary across the lot. The classification has to be settled before the count begins, not argued over afterwards.
Greige and Unprocessed Fabric
Greige is fabric as it comes off the loom or knitting machine, before any wet processing, and it is handled in a way that reflects the variability of that state. Measured by weight or by length is the first question and the answer is generally weight. Roll length varies within a lot because of loom stoppages and joins, and the roll ticket states what the loom recorded rather than what a measuring table would confirm, so a length-based count relies on tickets that were never independently verified. Weight is measurable directly and repeatably. Conversion factors and their reliability then become the issue, because the fabric is eventually sold by length. Converting weight to length requires the weight per unit area and the width, and both vary within a lot, so the conversion is an approximation whose accuracy depends on how tightly the construction was controlled. A conversion factor carried unchanged across constructions is a source of permanent error. Condition and storage effects matter more than for finished goods. Greige absorbs moisture, which changes its weight directly, and stock stored in damp conditions will weigh more without any additional fabric being present, so storage conditions bear on the quantity itself rather than only on saleability.
Finished Fabric
Once fabric has been through processing it is sold by length, so the verification changes method entirely. Piece length and roll counting is the basis: each roll carries a stated length, and the count establishes the number of rolls and the length recorded against each. Verifying the stated lengths requires measurement on a table or a metre counter, which is slow, so a sample is measured and the result used to assess whether the tickets as a population can be relied on. A sample showing systematic overstatement means every ticket is suspect. Shade lot capture is the field that turns a quantity into a saleable quantity. Fabric of the same specification dyed in different lots differs visibly in colour, and an order has to be filled from one lot, so recording the lot alongside the quantity is what allows the closing stock to be read as quantities an order can actually be met from. Short lengths and their value are the third element. Every cutting operation leaves remainders, and rolls below a usable minimum length cannot fill a normal order however sound the fabric is, so they realise a fraction of the rate and have to be identified rather than aggregated with full rolls.
Trims, Accessories and Packing
Trims are the third population on a textile floor and they are verified quite differently from either fabric class. High count and low unit value describes the whole category: buttons, zips, labels, hooks, threads, hangers, polybags and cartons, running to thousands of item codes with individual values so small that counting each precisely would cost more than the stock is worth. Sampling rather than full count is therefore the sensible approach, and the sampling is by value and by movement. The higher-value trims and the fast-moving ones are counted properly, while the long tail is verified in aggregate, often by weighing a sample to establish a piece count and applying it to the total weight. The basis is documented rather than assumed. Obsolete trims tied to discontinued lines are where the value question actually sits in this category. Trims are bought against specific styles, frequently with branding or a colour matched to a garment, so when a style is discontinued the remaining trims have no alternative use at all. They are not slow-moving; they are finished, and a trims store that has never been reviewed for this typically holds years of accumulated stock at full cost.
Evidence Across the Hierarchy
Textile stock is verified as a chain rather than as three separate populations, because the classes are the same material at different stages. Process loss between stages is the first thing reconciled: greige entering a process, finished fabric emerging, and the loss between the two measured against the norm for that process and that construction. Every wet process loses material, and the allowance is known, so the test is whether the actual loss sits inside it. The second reconciliation is the conversion from greige input to finished output, which requires weight and length to be related through the fabric's weight per unit area. That relationship is what allows a length of finished fabric to be checked against the weight of greige it consumed, and it is the only arithmetic that ties the two records together. An unexplained conversion gap points in one of three directions: greige that left without being processed, finished fabric produced and not recorded, or a process loss allowance that no longer describes the process. Each is a different problem, and the reconciliation identifies which before anything is concluded.
Running a Full Textile Count
Sequence the three classes rather than working through the floor geographically. Greige first, because it is the input and its quantity constrains what the conversion reconciliation can conclude. Finished fabric second, since it is measured differently and needs the greige position to be settled before the conversion can be tested. Trims last, as they are independent of the other two and can absorb whatever time is left. Working geographically means all three classes are counted in a mixed sequence and the reconciliation cannot be assembled until everything is finished. Staffing and equipment follow from the classes. Weighing greige needs calibrated scales at the point of counting; measuring finished fabric needs a measuring table or a metre counter and takes considerably longer per roll; counting trims needs a weighed sample to establish a piece count. A team equipped for one of the three will improvise on the others. A specialist team is worth it where lots and shades have to be captured, where processing houses hold material, or where a lender relies on the figure.
