Net Worth Certificate Format for an Individual (Word, Every Value Shown as X)

The one-page certificate a chartered accountant issues for one person's net worth, shown block by block as Patron issues it, with every name, date and figure shown as X, so you can see what the document says before you ask for one.

    • Patron's own format, as issued in engagements, written to the ICAI Guidance Note on Reports or Certificates for Special Purposes
    • Every value shown as X: a format to read, not a certificate to use
    • Shows the UDIN line every CA certificate has carried since 1 February 2019

    One page, nine blocks

What an individual's net worth certificate format contains

A net worth certificate for an individual is one page: the certifying paragraph, the assets and liabilities in two short tables, the net figure, and the firm's signature. Each block on the miniature page below jumps to that part of the format.

    1. Letterhead

The issuing firm's name, "Chartered Accountants" beneath it, and the firm's website at the right. The firm's, never yours.

    2. To Whomsoever It May Concern

The heading, centred and bold. The certificate is not addressed to one reader by name; the purpose is stated in the closing line instead.

    3. The certifying paragraph

Your name, PAN and present address; the records produced before the chartered accountant (bank statements, investment proofs and other relevant records); and the one date the statement of assets and liabilities is stated as at. The certificate speaks to that stated date; the reader decides how recent it must be, because no law fixes a validity period.

    4. A. Assets, in two groups

Liquid and near-liquid assets first: savings bank balance, term deposit, investment in shares. Then immovable assets, one row per residential property with its full address and your share of it in brackets. Total Assets (A) sits under the table.

    5. B. Liabilities

Loan and liabilities as one line, with Total Liabilities (B) under it.

    6. C. Net Worth

Written as the formula, Net Worth = Total Assets (A) − Total Liabilities (B), and then as the figure in rupees. Figures only; this format carries no amount in words.

    7. The closing line

That the certificate is issued on the records you provided, for the purpose of financial compliance only. This one sentence carries the basis and the purpose that a longer format spreads over several paragraphs.

    8. Signature block

For the firm by name, "Chartered Accountants", the firm's registration number; the signature and stamp; the signing partner's name, designation and membership number; the UDIN generated for this certificate, which every CA certificate has carried since 1 February 2019; the date and the place.

    9. Office band

The firm's head office and branch offices across the foot of the page, as printed stationery.

Is there an ICAI format for a net worth certificate? No separate ICAI guidance specific to net worth certificates was found. What exists is the Guidance Note on Reports or Certificates for Special Purposes (Revised 2016), which sets out what any certificate issued for a special purpose must make clear: who is certifying, what was examined, on whose records, as at which date, and for what purpose. A short format like this one carries those points in its certifying paragraph and its closing line rather than in separate paragraphs. A "format as per ICAI" means a certificate written to that Guidance Note, not a prescribed form.

This preview is unsigned and carries no UDIN. A real net worth certificate is signed by a practising chartered accountant and carries a genuine UDIN, generated for that certificate alone, which your reader can verify at udin.icai.org. The wording on this page cannot be filled in and submitted as a certificate, and nothing on it should be read as the figures of any person.

    Clause notes

How each asset line states its basis of value

The format shows a figure against each line and names the records it rests on in one sentence. This is the basis behind each line of the format and the record the chartered accountant ties it to, which is what a careful reader asks about first.

Savings Bank balanceGroup 1: liquid and near-liquid
    Basis

The balance as at the stated date, account by account, added into one line.

    Record

Bank statements to the stated date; a balance confirmation from the bank where the reader asks for one.

Term DepositGroup 1: liquid and near-liquid
    Basis

Principal, or principal plus interest accrued to the stated date as the bank confirms it; the chartered accountant uses one basis for every deposit on the line.

    Record

Deposit receipts or advices; the bank's confirmation with its date.

Investment in SharesGroup 1: liquid and near-liquid
    Basis

Listed holdings at the closing price on the stated date. Unlisted shares, if any, are shown at the basis the chartered accountant records, usually book value from the company's latest audited balance sheet.

    Record

Demat holding statement as at the date; the audited balance sheet for unlisted shares.

Residential property, with the share heldGroup 2: immovable
    Basis

The value of your share only, which is why the share is printed in brackets after the address. The value rests on the registered valuer's estimate as at the stated date or the stamp-duty value, as the chartered accountant records; the purchase price alone is not a current value.

    Record

Registered sale deed or title document; the valuer's report with its date; the stamp-duty value as at the date where that basis is used.

    Loan and LiabilitiesSection B
    Basis

The balance outstanding as at the stated date per each lender, added into one line: housing and vehicle loans, personal loans, credit card dues.

    Record

The lender's statement to the stated date; the card statement.

Other holdings are added as further rows in the group they belong to when you hold them: fixed and recurring deposits beside the term deposit, mutual fund units beside the shares, provident fund and PPF balances, a plot or a shop under immovable assets. Gold, a vehicle or a life policy enters only at a value a record supports, such as a valuer's certificate, the insured declared value or the insurer's surrender value letter. The chartered accountant certifies from the records produced; the certificate does not value assets, verify title or express an opinion on creditworthiness.

When this is not the format you need

Visa, company, firm and bank formats live elsewhere

This page shows the certificate for one person's own position in rupees. Four other situations change the document itself, not just the names on it.

    For a visa

The same statement, but with the figures also shown in the currency the consulate reads, the conversion rate and its date stated, and the purpose line naming the visa category.

See the net worth certificate for visa page
    For a company

Built from the audited balance sheet, not a personal statement: paid-up capital and reserves less the deductions the reader's rule requires, certified for the company by name.

See the net worth certificate for a company page
    For a partnership firm

Drawn from the partners' capital accounts and the firm's books, and kept separate from any partner's personal net worth, which is a different certificate.

See the net worth certificate for partnership firms page
    For a bank loan

Usually the individual format above, addressed to the lender, with every existing charge shown against the asset it sits on, because the lender reads it for what is still free to secure.

See the net worth certificate for bank loan page

If the acceptor gives its own format, use it. Many banks, tender bodies, embassies and regulators prescribe their own wording and their own table. The chartered accountant then certifies in that form, and this page is only a guide to what each line means.

    What the file is for

Read it before you ask for a certificate, so you know which records the statement will rest on and which basis each line will carry. Show it to the bank, consulate or court that asked you for a net worth certificate and ask whether this shape will be accepted or whether they prescribe their own.

It is not a form to complete yourself. A net worth certificate is issued by a practising chartered accountant from your records, signed by that chartered accountant, and carries a UDIN generated for it. Filling the X's with your own figures produces a letter, not a certificate.

When you need the real thing

Need it issued, not just read?

Banks, consulates, courts and tender bodies usually require the certificate from a practising chartered accountant holding a certificate of practice, with a UDIN they can verify. Tell us who has asked for it and the date the figure must speak to, and a CA tells you which of your records the statement can be built from before any work starts.
