What Is IEC Renewal (Annual Updation)?
IEC Renewal, officially known as IEC Annual Updation, is the mandatory process of logging into the DGFT portal and confirming or updating your Import Export Code (IEC) details every year between April 1 and June 30. This was introduced by DGFT Notification No. 58/2015-2020 dated 12 February 2021.
Before 2021, the IEC was issued once and remained valid for a lifetime with no annual compliance. The 2021 amendment mandates that all IEC holders must log in and either confirm existing details (if no changes) or update modified details during the April-June window each year. If not completed by June 30, the IEC is automatically deactivated.
A deactivated IEC is functionally equivalent to not having an IEC at all. The IEC number itself does not change during this process - annual updation simply confirms or modifies the existing IEC record.
Key Terms for IEC Renewal:
IEC (Import Export Code) / e-IEC - A unique 10-digit identification number issued by DGFT. Mandatory for customs clearance, international banking, and claiming export incentives.
Annual Updation Window - April 1 to June 30 each year. All IEC holders must confirm or update details during this period.
IEC Deactivation - Automatic suspension when annual updation is not completed by June 30. Deactivated IEC cannot be used for any trade activity until reactivated.
IEC Reactivation - Restoring a deactivated IEC by completing the updation on the DGFT portal. Auto-approved upon submission.
Who Must Complete IEC Renewal?
IEC Annual Updation is mandatory for ALL IEC holders without exception:
- Active exporters and importers regularly engaged in international trade
- Dormant or inactive IEC holders who are not currently importing or exporting
- IEC holders with no changes in business details (must still confirm)
- All entity types: Private limited companies, LLPs, partnership firms, sole proprietorships, and individuals
- Pre-2021 IEC holders whose IEC was issued under any previous FTP period
- Service exporters (IT, consulting, BPO) with IEC
- Star Export Houses and other recognised exporters under FTP
Note: All IECs not updated since 2014 have been deactivated by DGFT. If your IEC was issued before 2014 and never updated, it is already deactivated and requires reactivation.

7-Step IEC Renewal Process
Patron Accounting handles the complete IEC renewal process - from status check to updated certificate download on the DGFT portal.
Check Your IEC Status
Visit the DGFT portal at dgft.gov.in and use the 'View any IEC' feature. Enter your IEC number or PAN to check if your IEC is active or deactivated. If active, proceed with updation. If deactivated, the same process will reactivate it.
Login to the DGFT Portal
Go to dgft.gov.in and login using your registered credentials. If you do not have a DGFT account, register first. Use 'Forgot Password' if needed - a new password will be sent to your registered email.
Link Your IEC (If Not Already Linked)
If your IEC is not already linked to your DGFT account, click 'Link IEC'. An OTP will be sent to your registered email. Note: Simply linking a deactivated IEC does not reactivate it - you must complete the full updation.
Navigate to IEC Profile Management
Go to Services > IEC Profile Management > Update/Modify IEC. A tab displays your IEC details organized section by section: business name, address, directors/partners, contact information, bank details, and branch offices.
Verify or Modify Details
Review each section carefully. If no changes, confirm and save each section as-is. If modifications needed (address, director, bank), make changes and upload supporting documents. Rs 200 fee applies for modifications.
Submit with DSC or Aadhaar eSign
After confirming/updating all sections, submit using Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Aadhaar eSign. Proprietors can use Aadhaar OTP. Companies, LLPs, partnerships must use DGFT IEC-based DSC.
Receive Confirmation and Updated Certificate
DGFT auto-approves the updation. IEC status changes to 'Valid' (if deactivated, it is reactivated). Updated status is transmitted to the Customs system. Download the updated digitally signed IEC certificate.
Documents Required for IEC Renewal
If No Changes (Confirmation Only): No documents required. Simply confirm existing details on the DGFT portal.
If Modifications Are Being Made:
- PAN Card of the business entity (if PAN details updated)
- Aadhaar Card of proprietor/authorized signatory
- Updated address proof - electricity bill, rent agreement, property tax receipt
- Updated bank details - cancelled cheque or bank certificate
- Board resolution or authorization letter (for companies and LLPs)
- Updated MOA/AOA or Partnership Deed (if structural changes)
- Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) linked to DGFT IEC
- Supporting documents for the specific modification being made
Common IEC Renewal Challenges and Solutions
| Challenge | Impact | How Patron Accounting Solves It |
|---|---|---|
| Missed June 30 Deadline | Many IEC holders are unaware of the requirement or forget - leading to automatic deactivation, blocked shipments, and inaccessible export incentives | Patron Accounting sends proactive reminders starting April 1 and completes updation well before deadline for all clients |
| DSC Not Available or Not Linked | Non-proprietor entities must use DGFT IEC-based DSC. Many businesses lack a valid DSC or have not linked it to the DGFT portal | We procure DSCs and complete the DGFT linking process before initiating the updation |
| Pre-2014 Deactivated IECs | Some businesses have IECs issued before 2014 that were never updated and are now deactivated, requiring full reactivation | We identify all associated IECs, reactivate the correct one, and ensure data consistency across DGFT and Customs |
| Mismatched Details | Discrepancies between IEC, PAN, and GST records (name, address, directors) cause complications during updation | We cross-verify all details across DGFT, Income Tax, and GST portals before submission to ensure seamless processing |

IEC Renewal Timeline
| Stage | Estimated Timeline |
|---|---|
| IEC Status Check | Same day |
| Document Review and Cross-Verification | 1-2 days |
| DGFT Portal Login and IEC Linking | 1 day |
| Section-by-Section Verification/Modification | 1-2 days |
| DSC/Aadhaar eSign Submission | Same day |
| Auto-Approval by DGFT | Immediate upon submission |
| Total | 1-5 days (plan well before June 30) |
Critical: The annual updation window is April 1 to June 30. Start early to avoid portal congestion, DSC issues, and last-minute complications. DGFT deactivation happens in phases after June 30 - do not wait until the last day. Patron Accounting recommends completing updation by May 31 at the latest.
Consequences of Not Renewing IEC
Automatic Deactivation
DGFT automatically deactivates the IEC if updation is not completed by June 30 - the IEC becomes unusable for any trade activity
Customs Clearance Blocked
Deactivated IEC is not recognized by Customs. Import and export consignments will be held at ports and airports, incurring demurrage
Banking Transactions Blocked
Banks require active IEC for international trade transactions, foreign currency remittances, and letters of credit
Export Incentives Inaccessible
RoDTEP, duty drawback, and other DGFT incentives cannot be claimed with a deactivated IEC. Pending claims may also be affected
Financial and Reputational Losses
Held consignments incur demurrage and detention charges. Delayed deliveries trigger contractual penalties and damage trade partnerships
